In the aftermath of the massive earthquake which struck Haiti in 2010, fifteen-year-old Shorty waits in the rubble of a hospital for rescue. As he begins to die of thirst, he recalls the events of his life which have brought him to this place: growing up in the violent slums of Site Sol,ey, seeing his father killed and twin sister kidnapped, joining a gang, killing his first person at twelve and being shot himself. Shorty finds his recollections tied up with the dreams of Toussaint Louverture, a rebel slave leader from two hundred years in the past, and Shorty's battle for survival takes him places and times he never could have imagined.Librarian's Miscellania
