Lydia has lived peacefully in Venice for many years. Then the glimpse of a young man's face in the crowd threatens to change everything. As children Lydia and her sister were sent to live with their grandparents and in that cruel, loveless environment Lydia grew up fast, shadowed by guilt and grief. Now, twenty-eight years later, Lydia is persuaded to leave behind the safety of her life in Venice and return to England to face the past.
